I just started work at a store in CA, after having been free from Blockbuster for about three months while moving away from Tennessee. So far it's okay; the benefits are better at corporate stores, my co-workers are nice enough, and the customers haven't been the reeking asshats I grew used to at the old store. Even the stupidity has remained on a minimum... until now. This happened last Monday, and I find it amusing now, though it was infuriating at the time.
An old guy came up to the front counter while I was working on something, and asked me if I could find a title for him. Easy, right? The name of the movie, he said, was 2 1/2 Weeks. Uh-huh. Already harboring serious doubts about the accuracy of that question, and a few guesses as to what title he actually meant, I went to the computer and started typing it in anyway, just in case. 'two and a half weeks', no go. '2 1/2 weeks' a bust. '2 and a half weeks', '2 and 1/2 weeks', nothing was showing up and I told him so. He says we probably didn't carry it anymore, because he'd seen it there a month or so ago.
Okay, step two. I asked the guy if he remembered who was in the movie, or what it was about. He said he didn't remember the guy's name, but he knew another movie the guy was in, something with 'Nine' in the title. At this point I'm thinking Two Weeks Notice, with Hugh Grant who just so happened to be in Nine Months. I ask the guy, Hugh Grant, Nine Months?, and he said he thought so, so I went and grabbed Two Weeks Notice to show him the coverbox. Meanwhile he's in the drama section looking for the other movie the guy was in. When I show him Two Weeks Notice he tells me that's not it, and when I go back to put the coverbox up he brings me the coverbox for, can anybody guess?
That's right. Another 9 1/2 Weeks, with our old friend Mickey Rourke. At this point I think oh, problem solved! and reach for the 9 1/2 Weeks coverbox sitting almost right next to it. "Is this the one you're looking for?"
He galnces over the back, and... "Wha'? ...No no NO, it was 2 1/2 Weeks, I remember that!"
A moment of silence while I stared at him blankly. One minute later, I've finished reading off the names of every single movie Mickey Rourke has ever been in - Strangely enough, the only one that sounds even remotely like 2 1/2 Weeks IS 9 1/2 Weeks. Fancy that. - and the guy's telling me we just must not have the movie he's looking for, 2 1/2 WEEKS. He left without his soft-core porn, young grandson(?) in tow.
Can I get a 'what the fuck'?
